description=Hitory:\nThe first version ( V-8 ) flew in 1961 and constructed by Mikhail Leontievich Mil (1909-1970), father of the Mil Helicopter Plant. In 1962 the Izotov TV2-117 shaft-turbine engine, in 1963 a five blade main rotor system was installed in the aircraft. The serial production of Mi-8 (NATO code HIP) started in 1965. The MI-17 is an upgrade, equipped with stronger Izotov TV3-117 engine, vibration damper, lightweight fuselage, improved electronics and avionics. The production started in 1981. In 1988 the new TV3-117VM engine was build in ( MI-8MTV ).\n\nThe designation MI-17 is used in export, the russian army use the MI-8MTV marking. The MI-17 can be differentiate from MI-8 because the tail rotor is at the starboard side and the TV3-117 engine is shorter than theTV2-117. The helicopter can be used several purposes:\ncargo and troop transport, can be equipped with missiles, bombs, small arms and cannons. It can be modified to carry woundeds and medical corps. \n \n
